Who we are

Circles Network Wales is a National organisation supporting people with learning difficulties, their families, friends and organisations across Wales to develop Circles of Support.

Debbie Hill, Wales Co-ordinator is based in Cardiff. Debbie has a National remit to support people to build Circles of Support, develop training/ information events and create new services across Wales.

Norma McCarten, Project Manager,
Norma has worked in the social economy for 12 years recruiting, team building and providing coaching and assessment for people working with older, vulnerable adults.  Her experience in supporting people with continuing mental health and substance misuse issues, which threaten  relationship breakdown and homelessness, has involved working with people on the margins of society. ‘We bring our gifts to the world, our amazing differences, often rejected. A productive community requires a cooperative effort, we need everyone but most of all we need love’

Lyndsay Bone, Pembrokeshire Facilitator, Lyndsay supports Families/Carers of people with learning difficulties across Pembrokeshire who want to start their own Circle of Support. Enabling the families to receive more support and for individuals to combat social exclusion.

Nathaniel Foy – Facilitator for the Academy for Inspiring Inclusion.
Nathaniel has been a facilitator for Circles Network since 2004, delivering training in Person Centred Planning and Disability Equality. Nathaniel, is also the South Wales project worker for the European funded EQUAL project in Wales.

What we do

Essentially the idea of a circle of support is a very simple one, to help someone establish a personal social network. The circle is made up of people that support the focus person in a non-patronising  and non-judgemental way e.g. friends and family. Once formed, the circle is there to assist the person to achieve the dreams and ambitions that they may hold. In all aspects of our work we employ a Person Centred approach, allowing individuals to be in full control of all aspects of their lives.

Many people across Wales are really embracing the true meaning of what a circle is and what it can help you achieve. With many fun nights had with their Circle of Friends (from Karaoke nights, bowling, dinner parties and garden parties), to people making life changing decisions with the support of their circle (people choosing to move into their own homes, advocating for their rights, accessing direct payments, and learning a new skills), people are benefiting in all manner of ways through establishing their circle of support.

We also hold gathering events where people have the opportunity to learn more about our work, whilst also meeting other individuals who have a circle of support. Our gatherings are open events, and the theme is always fun and friendship! We hold events such as Karaoke Nights, Discos, Christmas Parties, Picnics, Day Trips, and mini events such as nights out bowling, to the cinema and meals out.

Training

Across all areas of Wales we develop links with voluntary organisation, people with learning difficulties, parents and carers, practitioners and professionals to deliver the message that Person Centred Planning and Circles of Support is now the way forward for people with learning difficulties in Wales.  Through our training and information events we enable people to understand the concept Person Centred Planning, empower them by teaching Person Centred Planning tools, and showing how it can enable people to have an inclusive role within their community through making choices and decisions that are right for them.
