Life Story: Peterborough Project

Peterborough Project

Circles Network was approached in early 2010 by NHS Peterborough Primary Care Trust to undertake a one year project to support 41 adults with learning difficulties and mental health issues. The individuals involved have spent many years living in long term institutional care and have now been moved to reside in smaller residential or supported living homes.

The aim of the project, is to give each individual the opportunity to create their own unique Person Centred Plan and wherever possible to develop a Circle of Support.

This project will also give us the opportunity to work with the staff and supporters of individuals within their homes to help them develop these approaches. Training and guidance will be offered through a series of gatherings that Circles Network organises throughout the year.

Our person centred approach to working and planning is a very different experience for the individuals and their staff alike and we are hoping that it will be embraced by all.

Many of the people supported through this project have become extremely institutionalised over the years and some do not have any obvious family members or friends that are able to support them with planning.  The team are already developing creative and innovative ways to help the individuals involved to dream and plan, make decisions and take more control of their futures.

The project aims to enable people to:

  • Share their life stories with those that care for them.
  • Recognise and share their unique capabilities and qualities.
  • Make a number of positive changes to their lives now and in the future.
  • Be reacquainted with friends and loved ones they have lost touch with.
