What is the Positive Parenting Project?
The Positive Parenting Project, Northern Ireland, works side by side with
parents with learning difficulties, physical and/or sensory impairments and
enduring mental health issues offering support, education, and advocacy and
promoting positive parenting.
How do we Support Parents?
The support offered varies greatly and will be determined by the individual
needs of the parent/s. For one it may be a listening ear , for another it may be
practical support with day to day parenting issues.
We use person, child and family centred approaches such as person centred
planning and circles of support, which promote improved relationships and
communication, raise self-esteem and confidence and increase problem solving
skills
We provide parents with opportunities for empowerment
We use creative teaching methods to meet individual learning styles
How is our approach different?
Our
approach is founded on the principles of inclusion
All our work is underpinned by a strong values base. We believe that each
individual has the right to dream about, plan and create a desirable future –
parents have the right to dream about a future with and for their children
Through our well developed approach we promote opportunities for people to
develop natural friendships and relationships. It is important for parents to
have a good support network outside the family home to enable them to cope with
everything life has to throw at them
We believe in the development of the whole person rather than just one
part, taking into consideration health, relationships, home life, activities,
purpose, risk, learning and creative expression – as well as looking at the
practical issues surrounding parenting we think it is very important to consider
every aspect of the parent/s life in order to facilitate positive family
experiences.
