"I am not a
cabbage"

To write
an introduction to this amazing volume is a privilege, shot through with
pain. Robert's sudden and premature death, when I was far from ready and
ill-prepared to part with one of my dearest friends, has disabled me. There
is a jagged hole in my life into which the slightly chaotic figure of Robert
fitted perfectly. When we scan our lives we can map the evolution of all our
friendships. We marvel at their arrival and their miraculous threading into
our own personal tapestry. How beautiful they are.
Robert's
autobiography is intricately woven and I am proud to be one of the threads
in it, albeit a slender one.

Although I have known Robert
for thirty years it is definitely through the formation and strengthening of
his circle that we became very close. Robert describes how a circle of
support works for the benefit of all its members and this was definitely
true of his. This group of fun loving people formed around Robert, each
reflecting in some way Rob's incredible personality and range of talents.
There was plenty of hilarity, but we were never afraid to confront the
problems that assailed him in the bureaucratic nightmare he often faced,
especially in his struggle to prove he could live independently given the
right support.
